Why You Need an eSIM for Colombia

Colombia is a really popular travel spot in South America. Having mobile data is really important for getting around safely here. You'll use apps like Uber, DiDi and Beat for rides. They all need data to work. These apps are a much better idea than flagging down a taxi on the street in most cities.

In Bogotá, Google Maps helps you figure out the huge city and its TransMilenio bus system. Cartagena's old town is easy to walk, but you'll want data to find specific restaurants or nightlife in Getsemaní. Reviews and directions are key. Medellín's Metro and cable cars work great with real-time routing from Google Maps.

Lots of hostels and cafes have free Wi-Fi. But it's often pretty slow. An eSIM keeps you connected as you move between Colombia's diverse regions.

Network Coverage in Colombia

Our eSIM connects to Movistar Colombia. You'll get strong 5G and 4G coverage with them. Big cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Cali, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga and Santa Marta all have excellent signal.

Highways between these major cities usually keep good connectivity along main routes. The coffee region (Eje Cafetero) around Pereira, Armenia and Manizales has pretty reliable coverage. Even popular tourist spots like Tayrona National Park entrance and Villa de Leyva are covered.

Just know that more remote areas might have very limited or no signal. This includes the Amazon region around Leticia, the Pacific coast and jungle treks like Ciudad Perdida. Tourist corridors between cities generally stay well connected though.

Connectivity Tips for Colombia

  1. Uber, DiDi and Beat need data to work. These apps are strongly recommended for safe rides in Colombian cities. Try to avoid hailing taxis on the street; always use an app.
  2. Spanish is mostly spoken here. English is rare outside of big tourist hotels. Google Translate with data will really help with menus, directions and chats.
  3. If you're going to Ciudad Perdida or the Amazon, don't expect cell service for long stretches. Make sure to download anything you'll need before you leave the last town with coverage.
